Experimental Malaria Infections in Two Races of A. Stephensi *The experiments reported in this paper were done under the auspices and the support of the International Health Division of The Rockefeller Foundation, co-operating with the King Institute of Preventive Medicine, Guindy, Madras. The authors wish to acknowledge gratefully the assistance of Dr. B. Ananthaswamy Rao, B.Sc., M.B., B.S., M.P.H., Superintendent, Bureau of Epidemiology and Communicable Diseases, Mysore State, who collected A. stephensi mysorensis larvæ which were brought by the authors from Bangalore to Madras for use in the experiments.

were obtained from larvse in our laboratory colony which was started with larvse from some wells in Madras City. Those of the form mysorensis were obtained from larvse collected for us by one (B.A.R.) of the authorities whose work led to the separation of this form from the type (Sweet and Rao, 1937) and brought by us from Bangalore to Madras. We did not ourselves make a differential diagnosis. We fed the mosquitoes in three lots, both races in each lot feeding at the same time on the same carrier and having the same treatment thereafter. In lots 1 and 2 the donor was a girl of 4 years having for the first lot 6 and for the second lot 4 crescents per 100 leucocytes. The donor in lot 3 was a girl of 9 years having 3 crescents per 100 leucocytes at the time the mosquitoes were applied. In lot 2, some mosquitoes

Effect of Oral and Intramuscular Administration of Ivermectin in Guinea Pigs on Survival of Blood-feeding Anopheles stephensi under Insectary Conditions

Background and purpose: Insecticide resistance in mosquitoes particularly malaia may lead to reemergence of malaria epidemics. This study aimed to investigate the effect of oral and intramuscular administration of ivermectin on guinea pigs exposed to Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes, the main malaria vector. Materials and methods: The effect of ivermectin was studied in oral and intramuscular ad...

possibilities. During a study of village malaria in Mysore State (Sweet, 1937), several anophelines were studied, including A. stephensi, from various parts of the State, but no evidence of races of Indian anophelines based on egg patterns could be found and it was concluded that other methods to distinguish possible differences would have to be used. Such a new approach to the subject was sugg...

A Malario-Economic Survey in Rural South India *This paper is based on observations made as a part of the programme of Malaria Investigations, a project under the auspices and having the support of the International Health Division of the Rockefeller Foundation, co-operating with the Health Department of Madras Presidency and the Pasteur Institute of Southern India, in Coonoor. The authors are grateful to Dr. V. P. Jacob and Mr. T. Ramachandra Rao, of the staff of Malaria Investigations, for their assistance.

This paper reports a malario-economic survey made by a house-to-house canvass in three malarious and two non-malarious villages in south-eastern Madras between March 1939 and March 1940. The survey was undertaken in order to obtain some understanding of economic and social conditions with particular reference to malaria and its control. The malarious villages included were Kasangadu, Tuvarangur...

Determination of Glutathione S-Transferase e2 Region (GSTe2) in DDT Susceptible and Resistant Anopheles stephensi Populations: Significance and Application of Nucleotide and Amino Acid Comparison

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are a major family of detoxification enzymes which possess a wide range of substrate specificities. Interest in insect GSTs has primarily focused on their role in insecticide resistance. In this study, following World Health Organization (WHO) routine susceptibility test, DNA was extracted from specimens of Anopheles stephensi collected from the Kazeroon distri...
